As I run several servers I decided to search for a new antivirus software that may be better than the one I currently are using (clam). So I downloaded AVG Antivirus Server Edition (from http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download.prd-alf,newest version was 8.5.0863).
So start by using the above link to download the newest .deb package with wget, for example:
Before installing the above package with the dpkg utility we must be assured we got the 32-bit libraries installed as the installation will fail otherwise, I posted about this in an earlier post about steam hl servers. But for the sake of keeping this simple, run the following command to download all 32-bit libraries that are needed:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
Now the above command will probably take a few minutes depending on your internet connection, my download ended with 160 MB of downloaded libraries. But when the download and installation is complete you may keep going by now installing the AVG software by using the dpkg command (be sure to replace the filename with your downloaded version name)
sudo dpkg -i avg85flx-r863-a3205.i386.deb
The installation should complete without any errors. You may also have to start the avg daemon for it to be possible to scan anything (this will be done upon reboot), to manually start the daemon run
sudo /etc/init.d/avgd start
If you need to uninstall the AVG application due to installation errors you can use
dpkg -l | grep avg
to list all avg installed packages, and then run:
sudo dpkg -r <package_name>
To completely remove the installed package.
