Installing RealPlayer on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit version

Published on Saturday, August 29, 2015

So there are still sometimes when you want to play RealPlayer files on your computer. I for one came across one such time today as I downloaded a older video lecture on “Introduction to the theory of computation”.

The download reachable on however only contains links to 32-bit versions of the realplayer. And 32-bit applications will not install directly under 64-bit systems. Here’s a quick solution.

As I’ve mentioned in another post you can download the ia32-lib packet to run 32-bit applications on a 64-bit system. For the realplayer you also need to install the lsb packet. So run this command firstly:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs lsb

After you have successfully downloaded and installed these packages you download the .deb packet from Then open the directory you downloaded the realplayer package in the terminal and run:

sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i RealPlayer11GOLD.deb

That should do the trick and your realplayer installation should work without any errors.
